Twitter is now an integral part of information consumption, brand buzz and technically even daily lives of millions if not billions. Before we get into the list, I would like to tell you that this list is by no means exhaustive or hard and fast. These things are small but important steps that I picked up over my years on twitter. They are more like rough guidelines and less like rules of the thumb. With that out of the way, let’s get started with the list

Have a complete profile

This is one of simplest and first things that you need to do if you are serious about your twitter profile, yet this is also often the most ignored and forgotten thing. Your profile needs to be complete for people to take you seriously, there are no two questions about that here. You need to have a proper profile picture (preferably not your dog or your car). People tend to take profiles with human pictures more seriously than the ones with funny stuff in them. The next step is to fill out your bio. Remember that you are an twitter and brevity is the order of the day, make it short, crisp and as exhaustive as possible within those constraints. I know that is a bit of a challenge but then what’s life without one? And I would highly recommend having your website URL listed on your profile, that works like a window into your work and a bit of a traffic driver too

Stick to what you know

Most people go overboard on twitter and spread themselves too thin. They tweet about everything under the sun and keep at it like their lives depended on it. But the actual fact is that your followers get lost to soon if you come across as a know-it-all who talks about everything. In stark contrast, what works very well is if you stick your area of expertise and keep talking around that. That way, people know what you are good at and hence when to seek your help. When they do, you are actually starting a sustained dialogue and a long engagement with them, this is something that everyone of social media aspires to do. Be the best of what you do and be earnest, that will work wonders

Avoid extreme emotions and personal details

There is absolutely no harm in being passionate about something, but then taking extremely emotional stands often on twitter may not be a good thing. For one thing, it will get hordes of trolls on your back and once they latch on, it is extremely difficult to get rid of them. There is also the fact that if you are often emotional, it’s like a bumpy ride for your followers and that is not ideal. Also it will dilute your impact if you are often emotional. A key thing to avoid oversharing is extremely personal details, there are instances where vacation and travel plans shared on twitter have led to robberies at the homes of people etc, so keep it as impersonal as possible and never get into too many details

So these are the three things that will get your twitter profile noticed, what are the other things that you follow? Let me know!
